News Guardian. Do you use this agency often? People who join dating agencies are all sad, ugly and weird, right? In fact around two million Britons currently use them. Emma Brockes on why we can’t find love the way we used to Monday 28 August The Guardian At Club Sirius, the dating agency for “single, well-educated and articulate people”, success isn’t measured by the number of members who marry each other, but by the number who take the altogether more daring step of recommending the service to a friend.[rs_table_products tableName=”Best Dating Websites”]

Like most of Britain’s introduction agencies, Club Sirius competes most vigorously not against its rivals, but against its public image as a succour for the undateable. By recommending it to a friend, members are seen by the club’s management to have faced out a powerful taboo. That taboo was challenged last week when a study, by Professor Richard Scase of the Canterbury Business School, revealed that one in five single Britons – roughly 2m people – use dating services to find a partner.

He expects the figure to double over the next five years, due to the corrosive effects of long working hours. Agencies predict that the days of clients having to lie about where they met are ending. Such optimism may be premature. James is a year-old from Cheshire who, as a smart, sophisticated and avowedly not desperate sales manager, epitomises the new breed who have joined dating agencies but he is still reluctant to be identified.

I was out every Friday and Saturday night and once midweek, and I never met anyone. I’m not a shrinking violet but I never, ever met anyone. After being single for 18 months, she joined an agency. She is a rapacious New Yorker whom one can imagine yanking together clients before they have time to say “stigma”. My parents met at a dance after the war.

That’s not going to happen today. Young people say that nightclubs aren’t the right place to meet people. The workplace was always a main way of meeting people, but relationships at work are increasingly discouraged. People come home after a hour day and they don’t want to go looking for a tapas bar to hang out in. People are travelling a great deal. The extended family doesn’t exist any more. But while meeting someone over the internet isn’t remarkable – one of its main functions is social, after all – the old-style dating agencies still get a hammering in popular culture.

James joined up for all the reasons Corbett mentioned: In any case, he says, dating someone from work would indeed be “frowned upon”. Yet James found it hard to confide about his membership. Since it is a fundamental principle of masculinity to chase and win the woman unassisted, men who join a dating agency risk being consigned to the loser category.

It takes a lot of confidence to get up and do something like this and I don’t think sad losers would have it in them. Now three of them are members. You can’t consider him. It used to be something almost shameful. At the start of the 80s it was all you could do to get an advert in the paper. You were looked upon as one up from prostitution. People used to come shuffling in apologetically and ask to close the door behind them.

I’ve been to clients’ weddings where I’m not allowed to let people know who I am. I’ve told their friends they met in the pub, even though they live 70 miles apart. But younger people who are used to going to consultants for everything see it as completely normal. Dating agencies still rub against the received wisdom that you can’t force the hand of Cupid by filling in forms and attending singles nights; that, as Diana Ross put it, you can’t hurry love.

There’s a common bond. You both know what to expect, having read each other’s profiles and spoken on the telephone. In a bar it’s all about whether you fancy them or not, which is much more superficial. How many people, if they wrote down their partner’s vital statistics on a piece of paper, would pick them out as the person they were meant for? Size 14 is acceptable, 16 is marginal and 18 is over the top.

How you speak is important. It’s not about money. His agency merely articulates the prejudices exercised by everyone in the search for a partner. Dateline, still cranking out computer matches after 34 years, has almost acquired kitsch status, with its never-changing advertisements and felicitous non sequiturs. The Dateline advertisement is so much a part of mainstream culture that it has been the subject of detailed “post-feminist text analysis” in a paper delivered by Professor Sarah Mills of Sheffield Hallam University.

She argued that the language of the advert was implicitly sexist, riddled with gender-specific terms such as “chatty”. Even the much-mocked lonely-hearts column is enjoying a renaissance of sorts among young people who use it as a cheap and cheeky diversion with which to amuse their friends. Miranda, 27, is a successful publishing executive who last year put an advertisement in a national newspaper reading: They focused on the adult fun part rather than the millionaire part.

It’s pot luck as to who you meet in a bar, so it’s no different going through a paper. And the fact that it was free was a big incentive. But the first guy who rang was really slimy and I lost my nerve. It is this pecking order between the introduction services themselves that highlights the intractable human need for sexual superiority. If people at Club Sirius look down on people at Dateline, who look down on people in the lonely hearts columns, who are looked down on by everyone and who in turn assume a kind of ironic superiority, then it seems unlikely that anything much will be changing this year.
